In a significant victory for former President Donald Trump and his endorsed candidate, state Sen. John McGuire has officially been declared the winner of the Virginia primary over incumbent Rep. Bob Good. The race was called by the Virginia State Board of Elections on Tuesday, with McGuire leading by 374 votes out of more than 62,000 cast.

McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, had declared victory on primary night, stating that he was "your Republican nominee" for Virginia's 5th Congressional District seat. Trump had endorsed McGuire over Good, who had angered some prominent members of his own party during his time in the lower chamber.

Good had taken the reins as chairman of the conservative Freedom Caucus earlier this year, but had rankled some Republicans with his support of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis during the 2024 GOP presidential primary. Good was also one of just eight Republicans who joined with House Democrats to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year.

After the initial tally showed McGuire in the lead, Good began raising questions about election integrity, claiming that there were several suspicious fire alarms triggered at polling stations on primary night. However, local officials have stated that an alarm at Liberty University, Good's former employer, was set off by cleaning equipment and prompted a brief evacuation.

Outside groups had pumped an estimated $10.7 million into the contest, with more than half of it aimed against Good. McGuire is now favored to win the seat in the general election over Democrat Gloria Witt.

The victory for McGuire is a significant win for Trump and his endorsed candidates, as the former president continues to play a major role in Republican politics. Trump had touted his backing of McGuire during a post-debate rally in Chesapeake, Va. last Friday, stating that he had helped McGuire rise in the polls and ultimately win the primary.

The win also highlights the ongoing divisions within the Republican Party, as Good had been a prominent member of the conservative Freedom Caucus. However, his support for DeSantis and his role in ousting McCarthy had angered some within the party.

McGuire, for his part, has expressed gratitude for Trump's endorsement and has vowed to continue fighting for conservative values in Congress. "Number one, I want to thank God," McGuire said in a statement. "We could not have done this without my wife Tracy, our incredible team, and of course President Trump! This is the honor of a lifetime."
