Sen. Ron Johnson Releases Preliminary Investigation on Trump Shooting

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., has released a preliminary report on the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, revealing new details about the incident that occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Johnson emphasized that his investigation is still in its early stages and that the purpose of his early report is to increase transparency and encourage whistleblowers to come forward with more information.

According to the report, Secret Service was absent from a security meeting conducted in the early hours of July 13. Local law enforcement informed Johnson's office that days before the rally, they learned from Butler County law enforcement that Secret Service was not going to send their own snipers to the rally and that local law enforcement would need to go "sniper heavy" in order to ensure proper coverage. However, Secret Service later changed course and decided to send two sniper teams.

The report also revealed that an unidentified individual wearing a suit, whom local law enforcement assumed to be a Secret Service agent, requested photos of the alleged shooter's dead body be sent to a phone number with a 215 (Philadelphia) area code. The recipient of those photos was apparently an ATF agent, who was supposedly going to conduct a facial-recognition search on the alleged shooter, Thomas Crooks. However, Johnson's report said his staff tried talking to that ATF agent, but they were stonewalled.

Johnson criticized federal law enforcement for not providing any records about the Trump assassination attempt and for not even promising to maintain their records for Congress. He said the lack of transparency from federal entities regarding the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt is unacceptable.

Outgoing, disgraced Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle is still expected to testify about the event Monday before the House Oversight Committee, though it's not clear whether she'll appear given her recent resignation announcement.

The shooting left Trump wounded, one rally goer dead, and two other spectators critically injured. The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place for political events and the role of federal law enforcement in protecting high-profile individuals.

Johnson's report has added to the growing controversy surrounding the shooting and the response from federal law enforcement. Republicans have called for more transparency and accountability in the investigation, while Democrats have accused them of politicizing the incident.

The Trump campaign has also weighed in on the matter, with former campaign manager and longtime advisor Corey Lewandowski saying that the new poll confirms his view of the race. He noted that New Hampshire is going to be a battleground this cycle and that the race is a dead even race within the margins. He also said that the fundamentals of the race for the White House haven't changed and that the Trump campaign will continue to focus on its bread and butter: Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, the states that are going to determine the outcome of this election.

The incident has also highlighted the ongoing debate about gun control and the Second Amendment. Republicans have argued that the shooting is evidence of the need for more armed security at political events, while Democrats have called for stricter gun control measures.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, the incident has underscored the need for increased security measures at political events and the importance of transparency and accountability in the investigation.
