**Chaos at DCA: Congressional Safety in Question After Plane Incident**

In yet another alarming episode at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, two American Airlines planes collided on the tarmac Thursday, raising significant concerns about safety—especially as lawmakers were onboard.

The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. when Flight 5490, bound for Charleston, South Carolina, was stationary at the gate when it was bumped by Flight 4522, which was preparing for takeoff to JFK International Airport. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and both aircraft returned safely to their gates.

However, this near-miss is emblematic of a troubling trend at DCA. Critics have noted that this airport has a checkered safety history, most infamously being the site of a military Blackhawk helicopter crash that claimed more than 60 lives. With lawmakers’ lives on the line, as well as those of countless travelers, it's time to question the airport's management and oversight.

Among those on board was Representative Nick LaLota (R-NY), who shared the startling experience on social media. "Serving in Congress has come with some once-in-a-lifetime experiences… like just now while stationary on the runway at DCA, another plane just bumped into our wing," he posted. Many in the Republican party echoed his sentiments of relief that no one was hurt, though they lamented the need for greater focus on airport safety.

Democratic Congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), who was also on one of the planes, echoed the shock, calling it "insane." Such violations of air safety should be met with urgency from Congress, yet this type of scrutiny could be overshadowed by partisan agendas.

As Congress returns from recess, this incident should serve as a wake-up call. Republicans must push for accountability and transformative safety measures in aviation as aviation safety continues to be an area ripe for improvement.

While the skies remain clear for now, can we trust that our leaders are safe while flying in and out of Washington? The incident at DCA begs the question: what is the plan to prevent future mishaps? If immediate action isn’t taken, could we see even more chaos in the skies? It's crucial that taxpayers and constituents don't just hear words but see results that prioritize their safety above all.
