Snap's Neglect Puts Children's Safety at Risk

Social media giant Snap is facing serious allegations as a lawsuit reveals the extent to which it failed to protect children on its platform.

Unsealed documents from the New Mexico Attorney General’s office detail alarming internal communications within the company, shedding light on its awareness of dangers like sextortion and child predation.

Shockingly, Snap employees reportedly discussed over 10,000 user reports of sextortion each month as far back as November 2022. This staggering figure represents only a fraction of the reality facing children on the app.

Despite this knowledge, Snap allowed the app to remain a breeding ground for such dangerous behavior.

In one particularly illustrative case, employees were made aware of a predator’s account associated with 75 reports of inappropriate content involving minors. Alarmingly, despite these serious allegations, the offending account remained active on the platform.

The lawsuit also highlights that Snap was aware that a significant percentage of its young users had been exposed to unwanted sexual contact. Internal research indicated that more than a third of teen girls and 30 percent of teen boys reported such experiences.

This negligence raises serious questions about corporate responsibility, especially as the company reportedly prioritized design over safety.

Incredibly, Snap allowed features such as Quick Add, which recommends users to connect with one another, without sufficient protective measures. Employees recognized that even after changes aimed at improving safety for minors, significant risks remained.

Additionally, the lawsuit claims that Snap’s platform facilitated the illicit sale of firearms. Employees noted that the platform hosted approximately 50 posts on illegal gun sales daily, often viewing reported content hundreds of times before acting.

The revelations in this lawsuit outline a troubling picture of negligence from a company entrusted with the safety of children. With such an inherent responsibility to protect its users, Snap's failure to take adequate measures raises fundamental questions about its commitment to the well-being of the youngest members of society.

As lawmakers and regulators consider the implications of this lawsuit, the need for stronger oversight of social media companies has never been clearer. The safety of America's children must come first, and the time has come to hold these companies accountable for their actions.
