President Trump Surges on Social Media Following Assassination Attempt and RNC Success

President Donald Trump's popularity is soaring on social media following a failed assassination attempt and a successful Republican National Convention. According to The New York Post, Trump's rise has been across multiple platforms, including growing his Instagram following by over a million, adding almost a quarter million new users on Truth Social, and adding 1.2 million to his TikTok followers.

President Trump, who only joined TikTok in June, has seen his popularity spread on the platform often used by young voters. In contrast to Trump's success, the current President Joe Biden, who joined the platform months before Trump, has stayed stagnant on the platform. President Trump picked up more followers in a few days than Biden has attracted since joining in February.

Last week, The Gateway Pundit reported that, after years of censorship of President Trump, his supporters, and conservatives, Mark Zuckerberg's Meta finally lifted all restrictions on the former president's accounts.

This surge in popularity comes as Biden is reportedly seething at former Speaker Nancy Pelosi for not standing by him as he fights for his political life following his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump late last month. Pelosi met with dozens of Democratic lawmakers earlier this month to discuss next steps if Biden decides to drop out of the presidential amid facing serious concerns over mental fitness for office.

More than three dozen Democratic U.S. lawmakers have called for Biden to end his presidential campaign as he continues to fall further behind Trump in polling. CNN's Kaitlan Collins reported Friday night that Biden was "seething tonight, with much of his anger directed at Nancy Pelosi."

Numerous top Democrats, including Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), former President Barack Obama, and others all have encouraged Biden to strongly consider whether he has a realistic shot at beating Trump this fall.

CNN reported last week that in the future it will become "far more apparent than currently known" just how much Obama and Pelosi had their "fingerprints" all over the efforts to pressure Biden to drop out of the race.

In other news, concerns about the collapse of the Chinese Three Gorges Dam have emerged following a severe rainfall event in the headwaters of the dam. The dam, which is China's largest, is on high alert as floods triggered by torrential rains wreak havoc in the southwestern part of the country.

Record rainfall in Chongqing has caused flooding in a dozen districts and counties since Thursday, raising the water levels in 29 rivers, state news agency Xinhua reported. Six people have died in the region which has received over 250mm of rain, according to the Chongqing Hydrological Monitoring Station.

Dianjiang county in Chongqing received 269.2mm of rain on Thursday, the highest in a single day ever. There is evidence that the dam is badly sited and badly constructed, like a lot of other questionable construction projects in China. In 2020 operators admitted a large flooding event had deformed the dam wall, but claimed that the dam was still safe.

The Chinese government suspects the massive dam may cause significant environmental damage. Government officials have long defended the $24-billion project as a major source of renewable power for an energy-hungry nation and as a way to prevent floods downstream. However, in September, the government official in charge of the project admitted that Three Gorges held "hidden dangers" that could breed disaster.

A few days ago there was an 800,000 cubic meter landslide on the banks of the Three Gorges reservoir. The location is reported to be Jiajiadian Village, Guizhou Town, Zigui County, Hubei Province, on the banks of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Reports indicate that the landslide has a volume of about 800,000 cubic metres.

The context for this landslide is a spell of very heavy rainfall that has been affecting a large area of China. To manage downstream flooding, the Three Gorges Dam has been used to store water, but in the last two days the gates have been opened to create new storage capacity ahead of the next round of rainfall. This raises the possibility that the landslide might have been associated with the twin effects of local soil saturation and drawdown of the lake.

There is no way to know if this will be the year the Three Gorges dam collapses. People have been highlighting the problems with the dam and warning of the risk of collapse for decades, yet the dam is still there. But I would not be keen to live down water of such a structure.

I wonder what it costs to insure factories or real estate in the Yangtze Delta against flood risk? Perhaps someone in China can tell us – a sizeable fraction of China's population, and around a quarter of China's most important economic assets, are located down river of the Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze Delta.

No doubt when, not if, the Three Gorges Dam finally collapses, climate change will be blamed.
