A California couple has been ordered to pay millions in restitution for running a nationwide retail theft ring.

Michelle and Kenneth Mack, of Bonsall, California, were sentenced by a San Diego County Superior Court judge on Thursday. Michelle Mack received a delayed sentence of five years and four months, while her husband received the same sentence.

The couple was found guilty of conspiracy to commit a felony and organized retail theft, petty theft, and receiving stolen property. They were accused of running a multi-million-dollar operation in which thieves stole from Ulta Beauty and other major retailers, with many of the items ending up for sale on Amazon.

The Macks had pleaded guilty last month to the charges and were ordered to pay about $3 million in restitution to Ulta and another $13,000 to Sephora. They were also ordered not to leave the state or go near any Ulta or Sephora stores.

The couple had been running the operation from their 4,500-square foot mansion in Bonsall, where they oversaw a network of about a dozen people who stole millions of dollars in merchandise from Ulta, Sephora, and other major retailers.

The Macks were arrested in December 2023 after a search warrant was served at their Bonsall mansion, which is equipped with its own vineyard and chapel that the couple rented out as a wedding venue and an AirBnb. During the search, more than $300,000 worth of makeup and other products were found.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta originally estimated the losses at about $8 million but believed the final amount would be much higher. At least nine people were arrested in connection with the scheme.

The plea agreement lessened the charges against the Macks from 140 counts that were originally filed against nine defendants. Those original counts included 136 felony counts of grand theft, two counts of receiving stolen property, one count of conspiracy, and one count of organized retail crime.

This case highlights the growing problem of organized retail crime in the United States. According to a report by the National Retail Federation, organized retail crime costs retailers an estimated $700,000 per $1 billion in sales.

The Trump administration had taken steps to address this issue, including the creation of a task force to combat organized retail crime. However, more needs to be done to protect retailers and consumers from these types of crimes.

In this case, the Macks will face significant consequences for their actions. Not only will they serve time in prison, but they will also be required to pay millions in restitution to the retailers they stole from.

This should serve as a warning to others who may be considering engaging in organized retail crime. The consequences are severe, and those who are caught will face significant penalties.

It is important for law enforcement to continue to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of these types of crimes. Retailers and consumers deserve to be protected from those who seek to profit from theft and fraud.
