A shocking explosion at a church in upstate New York has left five individuals injured, including four brave firefighters who answered the call of duty.

The incident took place at the Abundant Life Church in Boonville, New York, on February 17, 2026.

Emergency responders reported that the explosion, linked to a gas leak, occurred as firefighters were arriving at the scene.

All of the injured, including the church's Pastor Brandon Pitts, are currently in critical but stable condition.

Fortunately, the timing of the explosion prevented a greater tragedy, as the church would have been filled with congregants during a Sunday morning service.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente praised the dedication and courage of the first responders.

He stated that the firefighters and church members are in the thoughts of many, commending their bravery in rushing toward danger to protect others.

Among the injured are fire chief David Pritchard Jr., age 60, and fellow firefighters Allan Austin, Nicholas Amicucci, and Richard Czajka, ranging from ages 43 to 71.

First Assistant Chief Dean Yauger shared that plans to airlift the injured were thwarted due to heavy fog, reflecting the challenging conditions first responders faced in their heroic efforts.

The explosion at Abundant Life Church underscores the need for continued vigilance and support for our emergency services.

In these difficult times, it is critical to recognize the selfless acts of those who risk their lives to protect communities.

As we await further developments from this tragic event, our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families.
