AUSTERITY

As New England contends with crippling energy prices and disruptive winter storms, a new poll reveals that women across the region feel increasingly misled by their state politicians about the impact of aggressive climate policies.

According to a recent survey from Independent Women, a staggering 82% of women report higher electricity bills compared to just five years ago.

Despite evidence connecting rising costs to the stringent decarbonization policies adopted by New England states, many residents still place blame on utility companies and the federal government.

The reality, however, points to a different culprit: the states' relentless pursuit of a 100% renewable energy target by 2050, which has resulted in skyrocketing electricity prices.

Over the past five years, New England has seen a dramatic 29% surge in electricity costs—far exceeding the national average. The average household now pays a staggering $250.82 each month, marking a 50.5% increase since 2024.

States in New England were early adopters of aggressive climate mandates like renewable portfolio standards and engaged in cap-and-trade programs that have proven inadequate in reducing carbon emissions.

A substantial 53% of respondents in the poll expressed feelings of being misled by elected officials regarding the efficacy and cost of renewable energy policies.

Significantly, a plurality of women favors a diversified energy grid that includes both conventional and renewable energy sources, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to energy affordability and reliability.

Support for natural gas remains strong, with 61% of respondents recognizing it as a clean-burning, reliable energy source, even as regional policies have historically blocked new natural gas infrastructure.

Experts have voiced concerns over New England's energy infrastructure, warning that a lack of new natural gas capacity could lead to severe electricity reliability challenges, especially in the face of harsher winters.

Despite claims of transitioning to renewable sources, the region remains heavily dependent on natural gas and nuclear energy. Recent studies suggest that restructuring the energy plan to focus on natural gas and nuclear power could save New Englanders upwards of $700 billion in energy costs through 2050.

Women in New England are calling for a re-evaluation of the state's energy policies, as many place their trust in elected Democrats who have recently distanced themselves from their previously championed climate pledges.

Conservatives stand at a crucial moment to address the concerns of these women regarding energy costs and security.

For real progress, New England must rethink its approach to energy, returning to affordable and reliable sources and away from costly mandates that have driven energy prices through the roof.
