Electric School Buses Leave Students in the Cold in New York

A new statewide mandate in New York requiring all school buses to transition to electric power by 2035 is already raising serious concerns among parents and students in the Lake Shore Central School District.

Reports have surfaced that forgoing proper heating on the electric school buses to conserve battery life is putting children at risk in frigid winter temperatures.

Parents, alarmed by complaints from their children, are claiming that some bus drivers are turning down the heat or even shutting it off entirely during their commutes.

As temperatures in the Buffalo area frequently dip into the 20s and 30s, children have been arriving home shivering and cold, leading some to carry hand warmers for relief on their rides.

Scott Ziobro, a concerned parent and former school board candidate, highlighted the chilling fact that heating operates on the same power supply as the bus itself, stressing that this misguided approach to environmentally friendly alternatives is putting students' well-being at risk.

With New York State mandating that all school buses must be electric by 2027, the Lake Shore District currently operates a mixed fleet, with 23 electric buses already in use.

Parents like Chris Lampman voiced their frustration when his son had to stand outside for over 35 minutes after his electric bus broke down in the cold while waiting for a substitute bus.

Another parent, Lynn Urbino, was horrified to learn that her grandson's bus felt like a frozen tundra due to the lack of heating. These heart-wrenching accounts underline a severe issue with the push towards electric vehicles that fails to consider real-world implications for families.

Despite the district's assurances that procedures dictate heat should be on for the duration of student transport, reports from parents continue to challenge this narrative. Further complicating matters, there have also been allegations of electric buses breaking down, potentially endangering the safety of students as they wait in dangerously low temperatures.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority champions the transition to electric buses as essential for cleaner air and quieter rides, but the current transition has left many families questioning the efficacy of this approach.

As this situation unfolds, it becomes clear that good intentions can lead to disastrous outcomes if they are not aligned with the needs of constituents.

As Conservative leaders have often cautioned, overreaching policies can have unintended and harmful consequences, particularly when they override common sense and the basic needs of American families.

New York's ambitious energy goals should not come at the expense of children's safety and comfort. This situation requires a thorough reassessment, lest we prioritize an ideological agenda over the well-being of our youngest citizens.
