**Destructive Litigation: A Draining Cost for American Families**

Excessive litigation is strangling the American economy and costing hard-working families thousands each year.

As inflation continues to burden household budgets, the financial strain has been exacerbated by runaway tort costs that stand at an astounding $529 billion in 2022 alone.

This hefty burden translates into an average expense of $4,207 per family annually, crippling many in states like California and New York, where the costs soar even higher.

For instance, residents in California are hit with a staggering “tort tax” of $5,429, while New Yorkers face costs exceeding $7,000.

These inflated legal expenses contribute to rising prices, diminished job opportunities, and stifled investment in innovation across the nation.

Trial lawyers often prioritize profit over justice, abusing the legal system to pursue frivolous lawsuits that only line their pockets while undermining the integrity of American businesses.

Fortunately, some states are setting a precedent by implementing reforms that effectively reign in these exorbitant legal costs.

West Virginia has emerged as a model example, having introduced reforms that enhanced transparency around predatory third-party litigation financing (TPLF), resulting in a significant 20% reduction in tort costs from 2016 to 2022.

These reforms have led to West Virginia possessing the lowest per-household tort costs in the country, illustrating that change is not only possible but attainable.

Meanwhile, Congress is taking action to push for national reforms that will address these pressing issues.

Republican Rep. Ben Cline’s Protecting Our Courts from Foreign Manipulation Act aims to tackle TPLF head-on and has already passed out of the House Judiciary Committee.

Additionally, Rep. Darrell Issa has introduced the Litigation Transparency Act, further emphasizing the urgency of restoring commonsense to America’s legal framework.

The current trend of excessive litigation poses a direct threat not only to the economy but to the very fabric of American society.

By prioritizing profit-driven lawsuits over meaningful justice, trial lawyers are only contributing to the growing inflation crisis.

As families across the nation seek relief from tight budgets, urgent reforms are needed to lower the burden of litigation, ensuring that justice is served without exorbitant costs.

America's hardworking taxpayers deserve better than to be held hostage to a system that prioritizes the interests of a few over the well-being of the many.

Facing a moment of reckoning, we must act now to reform our legal system, curb unnecessary costs, and prioritize the needs of everyday Americans.
