Overwhelming Discontent: Most New Yorkers Want to Oust Governor Hochul

As the 2026 gubernatorial race heats up, new polling data reveals a stark reality for New York Governor Kathy Hochul: the majority of voters do not support her reelection bid.

According to a Siena College poll published Tuesday, only 36% of New Yorkers are in favor of Hochul serving another term, while a resounding 55% prefer a different candidate.

This marks a notable decline in her support—down from 39% just a month ago—indicating growing disillusionment with her leadership in a state that has heavily leaned Democratic.

The situation is compounded by the fact that Hochul's low approval ratings have left her vulnerable, especially when considering that President Donald Trump, despite facing significant challenges in the Empire State, holds a favorability rating that is closing in on hers.

In an encouraging sign for Republicans, New Yorkers are increasingly looking for alternatives, with 64% of independents and 82% of Republicans indicating a desire for new leadership.

Even among Democrats, only a narrow majority of 51% support Hochul, showcasing a potentially vulnerable position that could be exploited by a strong Republican challenger.

While no Republican has formally entered the race yet, Representative Elise Stefanik currently leads the GOP primary field with 35% support, followed by Rep. Mike Lawler at 22%, positioning the Republican Party favorably as it seeks to regain ground.

This trend underscores a growing acceptance for Republican leadership in a deep-blue state, a significant shift that can only be attributed to the dissatisfaction with Hochul's policies and approach to governance.

The race towards the 2026 elections will surely spotlight these sentiments, presenting Republicans with a unique opportunity to capitalize on the discontent that defines the current landscape of New York politics. As Hochul grapples with her diminishing support, New Yorkers are calling for change, signaling a potential resurgence for the GOP as they aim to alter the course of governance in a state that has often seemed unshakably blue.
