Justice Served: Nigerian Scam Defrauds Elderly Americans

Astonishingly, justice prevails as a Nigerian illegal alien and his wife have been sentenced for a fraudulent scheme that defrauded elderly Americans out of more than $3 million.

Darlington Akporugo, 47, and his 37-year-old wife, Jasmin Sood, will spend over 15 and 10 years in federal prison, respectively, for orchestrating a heinous romance scam that preyed on vulnerable seniors across the nation.

The perpetrators, both residing in Houston illegally, operated a sophisticated operation that used elaborate deception to manipulate many elderly victims, particularly widows, into sending money under false pretenses.

Akporugo posed as a romantic interest online, luring victims with fake identities and fabricated stories. His tactics included convincing them to purchase luxury items, which he and Sood then enjoyed at their victims’ expense.

This egregious betrayal extended beyond emotional damage; it left many elderly victims financially ruined, a harsh reality that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has underscored.

As Special Agent Chad Plantz stated, “Romance scams and other financial schemes like this exploit our nation’s elderly and vulnerable populations out of their hard-earned retirement savings.” The emotional toll, coupled with the financial devastation experienced by families across the country, illustrates a broader issue that must be addressed.

Sadly, this case is part of a troubling trend. Only earlier this year, several Nigerian-based scams surfaced in Texas, exposing the systemic nature of this fraud and the urgent need for stronger border security and immigration reforms.

The current administration understands the gravity of such crimes and has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting American citizens, especially the most vulnerable among us.

Both defendants face three years of supervised release upon serving their sentences, and they have been ordered to repay the full amount they stole. Nonetheless, this alarming case serves as a reminder of the necessity of holding accountable those who flout our laws and exploit our citizens.

As the nation navigates ongoing immigration debates, we must remember the direct impact that such crimes have on American lives.

Legitimate efforts to secure our borders and enforce immigration laws can help prevent such outrageous scams from continuing to harm American citizens and their communities.

The Trump administration is committed to preserving the safety and security of American families, ensuring that justice prevails against those who prey on the elderly and weaken societal trust.
