Judicial Bias Threatens Pro-Life Speech and Advocacy

The recent ruling by the Maryland Circuit Court that found Patrick Brice not guilty of felony assault against pro-life advocates underscores growing concerns over judicial bias and the protection of free speech.

Brice was accused of violently assaulting two elderly men, Dick Schaefer and Mark Crosby, who were peacefully standing outside a Planned Parenthood facility in Baltimore last year.

The altercation left Schaefer unconscious and Crosby with serious injuries, including multiple fractures to his face. Despite the severity of the attack, a jury only convicted Brice on misdemeanor charges, leaving many to question the justice system’s commitment to upholding the rights of pro-life advocates.

Laura Bogley, Executive Director of Maryland Right to Life, has rightfully pointed out that this decision reflects a troubling trend in which pro-life speech is disregarded.

This ruling not only diminishes the seriousness of the violence against advocates for life but also represents a failure to recognize and enforce the FACE Act, designed to protect individuals on both sides of the abortion debate.

Bogley voiced the frustration felt within the pro-life community, stating, “This was a violent hate crime and an attack on Catholics and religious freedom everywhere.”

Moreover, the decision not to classify the attack as a hate crime raises pertinent questions regarding accountability within the Maryland judiciary and suggests potential discrimination against pro-life perspectives.

Both Schaefer and Crosby have vowed to continue their mission, refusing to back down in the face of violence and legal setbacks.

Their resilience highlights the unstoppable spirit of the pro-life movement, which increasingly finds itself fighting not just for the unborn but also for the basic right to free expression and peaceful assembly.

In a climate where judges may hesitate to impose appropriate penalties for these violent acts, the pro-life movement’s determination only grows stronger.

As pro-life advocates like Crosby remind us, “Real action is necessary to protect free speech and religious freedom.” This episode illustrates the need for greater vigilance in defending these fundamental rights in the face of adversity.
