A new Gallup poll reveals a significant and growing disapproval among Americans regarding the participation of trans-identified athletes in women’s sports, with a substantial majority affirming that biological sex should dictate athletic eligibility.
According to the survey conducted from May 1 to 18 this year, nearly 70% of Americans oppose policies that permit male athletes, identifying as female, to compete against women in sports.
The findings show overwhelming support for maintaining fairness in women's sports, reflecting a persistent trend, particularly among Republicans. A striking 90% of Republicans surveyed back the notion that athletes should compete based on their biological sex.
In contrast, support for allowing trans-identified athletes to compete in women's sports has fallen among independents and even some Democrats, suggesting a shift in public sentiment that transcends party lines.
While the percentage of Americans holding the view that transgender athletes should only participate in teams matching their birth gender remains stable since 2023, the opposing view has decreased significantly from 34% in 2021 to just 24% this year.
Notably, the poll also reveals a decline in the belief that changing one’s gender is morally acceptable. The idea, which attracted considerable traction a few years ago, is now regarded as problematic by a growing number of Americans. Among Republicans, approval of gender transition as morally acceptable has plummeted to just 9%.
State lawmakers have responded to public opinion by enacting measures that reinforce the principle of fairness in sports. An impressive 29 states have moved to implement policies requiring athletes to compete based on their biological sex. These steps come in the wake of concerns raised about Title IX violations and the equity of women’s sports.
Under President Donald Trump's recent executive order, the administration has taken a firm stance against schools that allow male trans-identified athletes to compete in female sports competitions, clarifying the federal policy landscape surrounding this contentious issue.
Trump's actions align with measures taken by organizations such as USA Powerlifting, which has mandated that athletes compete according to their biological sex due to the inherent advantages males possess in various physical attributes.
As these developments continue to unfold, it becomes increasingly clear that the national dialogue surrounding gender identity in sports is evolving, with many Americans rallying around the importance of fairness and safety in competitive sports.
