Texas Students Suffer Pandemic Learning Setbacks, Urgent Action Needed

In a concerning revelation, newly released data reveals that a majority of students in Texas have not recovered from the detrimental learning setbacks caused by COVID-era lockdowns and virtual learning programs.

The Education Recovery Scorecard's recent analysis displays a troubling trend: Texas students, on average, are performing over half a grade level below their pre-pandemic achievements in math, and nearly a third of a grade level behind in reading.

With 88% of students enrolled in districts where average math performance remains below 2019 standards, the repercussions of the pandemic are evident across the state.

The scorecard, a collaboration of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University and The Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University, paints a stark picture of the aftermath of the previous administration's policies.

Unlike the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which broadly assesses state-level achievement changes, this scorecard offers a detailed view of district-level performance, highlighting that many students still struggle with fundamental skills necessary for their academic growth.

While some districts, particularly in the Houston area, have shown promising signs of recovery, they remain the exception rather than the norm.

For many Texas school districts like Arlington and Aldine, the situation is dire, with students lagging behind by an entire grade equivalent in math.

The pandemic's fallout has also exacerbated achievement gaps, with high-income districts recovering at a disproportionately higher rate compared to their low-income counterparts.

Texas ranked only 31st among states in math recovery and 8th in reading, raising questions about the effectiveness of the current leadership and their approach to education.

Chronic absenteeism, which has surged from 11% in 2019 to 21% in 2023, has emerged as a major contributing factor to these ongoing challenges.

These findings prompt a crucial conversation about the importance of educational freedom and the need for local communities to reclaim control over their school systems.

As the nation witnesses the impact of restrictive policies and ineffective educational practices, Texans are reminded that in the fight for quality education, local governance and parental choice should be defended staunchly.

Significantly, these developments underscore the necessity for action—and perhaps a reconsideration of policies by macro-level leadership that has not yielded beneficial results for students.

It's time to prioritize our children and ensure they receive the education they deserve, free from the broader, ineffective hand of bureaucratic overreach.
