Texas GOP Divided: Burrows Elected Speaker with Democrats

In a shocking display of party division, State Rep. Dustin Burrows has been elected as Speaker of the Texas House, relying heavily on Democratic support to secure the controversial position.

The election, which took place just hours after the new legislative session commenced, was a clear indication of the rifts developing within the Texas Republican Party.

Burrows, who represents Lubbock, clinched the gavel with 85 votes in the second round of voting, yet he only garnered the backing of 49 Democrats alongside 36 Republican votes.

This result has ignited a firestorm among conservative activists and Republican officials, who assert that Burrows’ partnership with Democrats undermines the values and priorities of the party.

Despite the Republican majority in the House—with 88 GOP members to just 62 Democrats—Burrows’ approach has drawn ire from significant members of the party.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick expressed his dismay over the coalition-building strategies employed by Burrows and his supporters, emphasizing the importance of preserving Republican principles in House leadership choices.

In a statement, he lamented, “Speaker Burrows was handed the speakership by Democrats, as has happened behind closed doors session after session since 2009.”

The contention surrounding Burrows is further intensified by his historical ties to former Speaker Dennis Bonnen, a figure who has faced his share of controversies.

Newly elected State Rep. Shelley Luther took to social media to voice her frustration, asserting that the choice to align with Democrats was a blatant disregard for the Republican grassroots.

“Today, the RINO (anti-MAGA) Establishment laughed in the faces of our Republican grassroots,” Luther stated, indicating that such alliances may have significant repercussions in the upcoming primary elections.

In an equally scathing comment, State Rep. Tony Tinderholt declared, “Many Republican members just partnered with Democrats to steal the speakership from Texas Republican voters!”

The fallout from this election places the Texas GOP at a crossroads.

Party leaders are now considering disciplinary action against Republicans who aligned with Burrows during this crucial vote, indicating a desire for accountability in maintaining party unity.

As the legislative session unfolds, all eyes will be on Burrows to see whether he can navigate the turbulent waters of a fractured party while fulfilling the commitments that resonate with Texas conservatives.

With grassroots activists rallying against perceived betrayals within their ranks, the stage is set for a highly contentious period ahead, where the support of Republican constituents will be put to the test as they demand unwavering loyalty to party principles.
