A recent report has uncovered a significant misuse of taxpayer funds during a publicity stunt orchestrated by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

In September 2023, Granholm attempted to promote the Biden administration's aggressive push for electric vehicles (EVs) through a cross-country road trip intended to demonstrate the joys of EV travel.

However, this venture turned out to be an embarrassing misstep, revealing the administration's lack of preparation and understanding of the very infrastructure it seeks to champion.

According to an inspector general's report, the road trip incurred travel expenses totaling an extravagant $124,824, with numerous violations of per diem rates and travel rules.

The investigation found that a staggering 86% of travel vouchers exceeded federal lodging allowances, with some reimbursements unjustifiably high—one traveler racked up $409 above the allowed per diem for a single trip.

Moreover, Granholm's entourage failed to utilize government-issued travel cards, a required practice for federal travel, leading to unnecessary losses in potential discounts.

In a particularly glaring incident during the trip, the lack of adequate charging infrastructure was brought to light when a staff member blocked a charging station by parking a gas-powered vehicle in the bay.

This misguided attempt to secure a charging spot left a family with an infant stranded and prompted police involvement—ultimately, the law did not address the misparked car as it was not illegal to occupy the charging spot with a non-EV.

Granholm's scheme, intended to showcase the Biden administration's EV agenda, instead highlighted the inadequacies of the current charging infrastructure, raising questions about the practicality of a nationwide shift from gas-powered vehicles.

The report has raised essential questions about accountability and the effective use of taxpayer funds by the Department of Energy.

As Congress reviews these findings, the public remains increasingly skeptical about the Biden administration’s handling of energy policies, the transition to electric vehicles, and whether such ambitious goals are rooted in reality or mere political posturing.
