Tragedy struck the Long Island community this past Saturday as beloved high school hockey player Connor Kasin, just 17 years old, succumbed to a medical emergency during a charity game held in honor of a fellow student.
This event, designed to bring the community together following the tragic passing of Sabrina Navaretta, quickly became overshadowed by a heartbreaking loss that has left family, friends, and classmates in profound grief.
Connor was a senior at Massapequa High School and well-liked among peers. Reports indicate he collapsed during the intermission of the charity match at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Despite quick action from spectators who performed CPR, he was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital.
There is currently no confirmed cause of death, as Nassau police continue their investigation but indicate there is no suspicion of wrongdoing. The school released a letter expressing deep condolences to the Kasin family, remarking on how devastating this loss is to the entire Massapequa community.
Connor played for the Sharks Elite Youth Hockey team, and his coach, Jeff Tempone, characterized him as a “coach’s dream,” emphasizing his dedication to the game and his supportive nature towards teammates. The tragic incident echoes the pain felt by many as the community sought to honor Sabrina, who was lost in a car crash last year.
Sabrina’s parents, who have committed their efforts to raising funds for scholarships and support for grieving parents through their foundation, expressed their own heartbreak and extended their support to the Kasin family during this difficult time.
As the community mourns the loss of a promising young life, gatherings and grief counseling sessions have been organized to help students process this shocking event.
In times like this, unity and support among families, friends, and the wider community become paramount, reminding everyone of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in both celebration and sorrow.
