**Disaster**
The Biden-Harris administration has set a troubling new record, eclipsing $1 trillion in improper payments over their tenure, raising serious concerns about accountability and fiscal responsibility in Washington.
According to a recent report from OpenTheBooks.com, improper payments — defined as federal funds shipped to the wrong individuals, for incorrect reasons, or in erroneous amounts — have totaled over $800 billion from 2021 to 2023 when adjusted for inflation.
That staggering figure translates to about $450,000 wasted every single minute.
The alarming trend reveals that the problems span multiple government programs, with Medicaid and Medicare accounting for a staggering 43% of the discrepancies last year alone.
According to reports, deceased individuals erroneously received $295 million in pension benefits, while $171 million was sent to incarcerated individuals. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) alone wasted approximately $25 billion in fraudulent and erroneous tax credits, with certain IRS programs reporting a fault rate exceeding 30%.
This issue is not new but has worsened significantly under the current administration. In the second term of former President Barack Obama, around 4% of spending was classified as improper payments, which rose to roughly 5% under Donald Trump. Now, it appears that Biden is nearing 6%.
The severity of this crisis has caught the attention of lawmakers across party lines. Even some California Democrats are voicing their concerns. Legislative efforts to tackle improper payments have gained traction with the bipartisan “Improper Payments Transparency Act,” which recently advanced in committee, co-sponsored by Representatives from both sides of the aisle.
Internal dissent within the Biden administration itself has also surfaced. Officials, including Inspector General Sean O’Donnell of the Environmental Protection Agency, have acknowledged the daunting challenge of deploying new funds without making significant mistakes, particularly after receiving added funding from the Inflation Reduction Act.
As Congress grapples with an ever-expanding budget, the inability to control such rampant waste becomes increasingly intolerable.
Lawmakers and constituents alike are left questioning how $1 trillion in waste is acceptable while the nation's fiscal health hangs in the balance.
Perhaps it’s time the Biden administration prioritizes no-nonsense oversight and accountability instead of letting taxpayer money slip through the cracks at an unprecedented rate. The American people deserve better governance and should demand swifter reforms to ensure their hard-earned money is managed responsibly.
