Vandalism

Anti-Israel activists have recently targeted the homes of University of Michigan leadership, marking a disturbing trend that has alarmed many concerned about rising anti-Semitism on college campuses.

In an escalation of hostility, these activists vandalized the residences of President Santa Ono and Chief Investment Officer Erik Lundberg, spray-painting slogans that express vehement opposition to Israel.

This act coincided with the one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which claimed the lives of over 1,000 innocent Israelis—a tragedy that continues to highlight the need for a strong, unwavering support system for our allies.

The group responsible for this vandalism, calling itself "Unity of Fields," referred to the attacks as a form of protest against what they label the “genocide” of Palestinians.

This narrative, however, starkly contrasts the facts on the ground, where the real threat comes from terror organizations like Hamas, which have orchestrated violent attacks against civilians.

Moreover, the University of Michigan has witnessed a series of concerning incidents aimed at Jewish students and community members, including physical assaults and threats. Just recently, during Rosh Hashanah, an armed assailant held a group of Jewish students at gunpoint, reflecting not only a campus culture of intolerance but also the urgent need for effective leadership and security measures.

President Ono has voiced his concerns previously, indicating that the wave of anti-Semitism has left many students feeling unsafe. Contrary to the actions of those who vandalized his home, he has defended the right of Jewish organizations and individuals to thrive within the university community— an essential stance that highlights the importance of standing against hate regardless of its source.

As such incidents become more frequent, it is imperative that institutions not only condemn these acts of violence and vandalism but also take concrete steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

Condoning such vandalism as legitimate protest merely fuels a cycle of hate and division, and places unmerited blame squarely on Israel, a democratic nation that continually seeks peace in a region rife with turmoil.

Now more than ever, America must reaffirm its commitment to supporting Israel while fostering a campus culture that rejects all forms of hate and discrimination.
