**Chaos** reigns in Michigan as the Bureau of Elections tightens its grip on critical voter data, raising alarms among election integrity advocates and GOP leaders.
On September 24, the Michigan Bureau of Elections (BOE) announced a significant alteration to its Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) policy, restricting access to vital information regarding absentee ballots.
This abrupt decision means that key data fields—such as the dates ballots are requested and returned—will no longer be disclosed to election monitoring groups.
The rationale provided by the BOE, predicated on protecting voter privacy, has been met with skepticism from those in the election integrity community.
Experts argue that the dates an absentee ballot application is sent and returned do not infringe upon voter privacy and express concern that these changes threaten the integrity of elections.
Phani Mantravadi, CEO of Check My Vote, emphasized the potential consequences, stating that this concealment hinders essential auditing processes.
“Without this information, verifying the accuracy of the process becomes nearly impossible,” Mantravadi warned.
Patrice Johnson, chair of Michigan Fair Elections, further echoed these concerns, asserting that the absence of ballot serial numbers makes it nearly impossible to confirm that the ballot mailed is indeed the one that was returned.
"What could occur here is a vulnerable chain of custody that opens the door to fraud," Johnson cautioned.
The Michigan GOP's District 9 reacted swiftly, condemning the move as an affront to transparency.
Phil O'Halloran, the Election Integrity Chair for District 9, likened the policy shift to a veiled attempt to obscure the truth, referencing infamous past allegations of election misconduct during the 2020 voting cycle in Detroit.
“This is the digital equivalent of plastering pizza boxes on the windows at the TCF Center,” O’Halloran stated, crystallizing the frustration felt within the party regarding the implications of this decision.
As the 2024 election draws closer, the BOE's sudden changes are perceived by many as a strategic maneuver to limit oversight and create opportunities for bad actors to exploit the system.
In light of the new restrictions, Michigan Republicans are rallying support for a ballot tracking initiative designed to enhance transparency in absentee voting.
Deb Ross, Chair of District 9, called upon Michigan's citizens to mobilize in defense of election integrity, underlining the urgent need for vigilance in safeguarding democracy.
As Michigan navigates this murky political landscape, the implications of these new policies on the upcoming election remain to be seen—yet it is clear that the stakes are high and the need for transparency has never been more critical.
