Urgent Call to Secure Border From Drone Cartels

Explosive threats near the U.S. border have prompted urgent calls for action from lawmakers, spotlighting the escalating danger posed by drug cartels wielding drones packed with explosives.

Recent reports indicate that the Sinaloa Cartel's Los Salazar cell has been deploying drones in violent turf wars just two miles from the U.S. southern border. This alarming development raises critical questions about border security and the ability of U.S. authorities to protect American citizens from this emerging threat.

As tensions escalate, military leaders are expressing concern. Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot, commander of North American Defense Command, has reported that over 1,000 drones are crossing the U.S. border each month. Cartels are not only using these drones for attacks against rival gangs but are also surveilling U.S. law enforcement efforts.

In a concerted effort to combat this rising menace, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) has proposed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This amendment aims to establish a Counter Unmanned Aviation Systems (CUAS) task force within the Department of Defense, tasked with developing effective countermeasures against hostile drone incursions.

Sen. Ernst’s remarks highlight a crucial point: “On Border Czar Kamala Harris’ watch, murderous drug cartels are controlling the southern border and using drones for turf war attacks within miles of the United States.” She insists that the U.S. military must be equipped to respond decisively to these threats.

The urgency of this amendment is underscored by a broader recognition that the U.S. currently lacks robust drone detection capabilities. This deficiency has been pointed out by a bipartisan group of senators, who argue that outdated radar technologies must be updated to effectively address modern threats posed by small drones.

As the nation grapples with this significant security challenge, it is clear that a proactive approach is needed to safeguard the American people. The implications of unchecked cartel activity—and their adaptation of high-tech warfare—demand swift legislative action and comprehensive strategy to reinforce U.S. border defenses.

The situation calls for serious reflection on how we ensure the safety of our nation and its citizens in the face of evolving criminal tactics that threaten our very sovereignty.
