Tim Walz Faces Backlash Over Racially Biased COVID Policies

Tim Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota and presumptive vice presidential nominee for the Biden-Harris campaign, is facing scrutiny over his controversial COVID-19 policies that prioritized patients based on race rather than medical need.

Documents have emerged revealing that Minnesota's health department under Walz's leadership implemented a framework that assigned priority for monoclonal antibody treatments based on race.

This policy designated a healthy 25-year-old Black individual as more deserving of treatment than older white individuals who had comorbidities. Such prioritization drew significant backlash for introducing a racial bias into a medical crisis.

The decision was justified by citing guidance from the Biden administration and the FDA, which mentioned that race could play a role in determining individual risks for severe COVID-19.

However, critics argue that equating race to underlying health conditions undermines ethical medical practices.

America First Legal, a conservative legal advocacy group, condemned the guidelines as "blatantly unconstitutional, immoral and racist," challenging Walz's administration on the legality and morality of their COVID-19 response.

Following intense criticism, the Minnesota Department of Health ultimately abandoned these racially-based criteria in 2022.

This policy reversal comes in the wake of an increasingly polarized political landscape where Democrats are attempting to appeal to diverse voter bases.

Walz's administration has faced criticisms beyond this singular issue, including handling of lockdown measures that seemingly favored businesses over places of worship during the pandemic.

As he now aligns himself with Vice President Kamala Harris in the current campaign, the implications of these past decisions could weigh heavily on his ability to connect with voters, especially in light of his mixed track record on issues concerning freedom and public health management.

With the upcoming election, voters will likely need to assess whether such policies reflect the values they want represented in Washington.
