GOP lawmakers are stepping up their scrutiny of the Biden administration, particularly focusing on Vice President Kamala Harris’s national security adviser, Philip Gordon.
Congressional Republicans, led by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), have demanded answers regarding Gordon's alleged connections to an Iranian influence operation that raised serious red flags.
In a letter sent to Harris, they expressed concern over what they described as Gordon's complicit promotion of the Iranian regime's interests. This alarming situation is exacerbated by the fact that some of Gordon's associates have previously been linked to a now-suspended State Department official embroiled in controversy due to their ties with Tehran.
Stefanik has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration's foreign policy, particularly its approach to Iran, which she believes threatens U.S. national security and compromises Israel's safety. She stated, "The Biden-Harris Administration policy of appeasing Iran and abandoning Israel will only worsen if Kamala Harris and her Iranian apologist staff are elevated."
The advisor's problematic relationships extend to Ariane Tabatabai, who has been accused of participating in a covert campaign to manipulate negotiations surrounding the Iran nuclear deal.
Despite the serious allegations, including those suggesting coordination with high-ranking Iranian officials, Tabatabai continues to hold a significant role within the Department of Defense.
Stefanik and Cotton have noted that Gordon's participation in past discussions regarding sanctions on Iran has proven misguided and politically biased, further calling into question his fitness for such a crucial role in the national security apparatus.
They have requested a response by August 9 about Gordon’s security clearance status and any investigations that may be underway concerning his connections to Tehran.
As Republicans continue to shine a light on these potential security risks, it remains to be seen how the Biden administration will respond to these pressing concerns.
The spotlight is on national security, and the Republican Party is determined to hold accountable those they believe are jeopardizing American interests and alliances.
