Trump Survives Assassination Attempt, Media Blames Him

A 20-year-old man with a rifle attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The suspect, who was perched atop a nearby roof, fired several rounds at Trump, killing one attendee and wounding at least two others. Trump narrowly escaped serious injury or death due to a fortuitous head turn that moved him out of the bullet's path at the last second.

The mainstream media wasted no time in blaming Trump for the assassination attempt. George Stephanopoulos and Martha Raddatz of ABC News accused Trump of contributing to the violent rhetoric that led to the attack. They cited Trump's comments in January and March, in which he warned of bedlam and a bloodbath if the criminal charges against him succeeded. However, they conveniently left out the fact that Trump was discussing the auto industry at the time.

Mark Levin, a conservative commentator, criticized the mainstream media for their double standards. He pointed out that Trump had specifically told his supporters to protest peacefully on January 6, but the media always cut out that part of his speech to push their narrative. Levin also noted that Trump had offered 10,000 armed National Guardsmen to protect the Capitol building on January 6, but the Democrats rejected the offer.

The assassination attempt on Trump has highlighted the importance of the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment guarantees the right of Americans to keep and bear arms for self-defense. In the wake of the assassination attempt, some gun control activists have called for more restrictions on the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. However, as the Daily Signal points out, the government cannot protect every American from every potential threat at all times and in all places.

The Second Amendment is not just about hunting or sport shooting. It is about the unalienable right to self-defense. Ordinary, peaceable Americans rely on their right to keep and bear arms to protect themselves and their loved ones from criminals and crime. According to a 2013 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans use their firearms in self-defense between 500,000 and 3 million times annually. In 2021, the most comprehensive study ever conducted on the issue concluded that roughly 1.6 million defensive gun uses occur in the United States every year.

The Daily Signal publishes a monthly article highlighting some of the previous month's many news stories on defensive gun use that may have been missed or not made it to the national spotlight. The 12 examples provided in the article represent only a small portion of the news stories on defensive gun use that were found in June. They include stories of armed citizens who intervened to stop crimes, such as a ride-share driver who stopped a naked man from assaulting a woman, and a homeowner who held an intruder at gunpoint until police arrived.

The attempted assassination of Trump should not lead us to reevaluate the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment is not some dangerous and outdated relic that undermines public safety. It is, rather, one of the best tools ordinary Americans have when faced with violent threats to their unalienable rights. The assassination attempt on Trump should cause the nation to reevaluate plenty of things and give many an opportunity to pause for a moment of self-reflection. But in no world should it lead us to hamstring our right to an armed defense.
