Former President Donald Trump has reacted to President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the 2024 race, calling him the "worst president in the history of the United States by far."

In an interview with NBC News, Trump criticized Biden's handling of energy independence and immigration policies.

"There has never been a president who has done such damage to our country, from energy independence to letting in millions and millions of illegal immigrants," Trump said.

Trump also expressed his lack of surprise at Biden's announcement, stating that Biden "should never have been there in the first place."

According to a senior Trump adviser, the Trump campaign had been preparing for a matchup against Biden and had internal polling that indicated that Vice President Kamala Harris outperformed Biden in some cases, but that he outperformed her in others.

Trump continued his criticism of Biden in multiple Truth Social posts following the announcement.

The news of Biden's decision to drop out of the race came after a difficult 25-day stretch sparked by a disastrous debate performance on June 27. Biden's poll numbers had been slipping, donors had been fleeing, and party luminaries had been pushing him to exit the race.

Biden made the decision to abandon his re-election bid after speaking with a handful of trusted advisers and first lady Jill Biden at his vacation home on the Delaware coast. He reportedly felt betrayed by allies who turned on him in his hour of need.

The decision was abrupt, but it came after a hellish 25-day stretch sparked by the most disastrous debate performance in modern American political history on June 27. Biden failed to reassure fellow Democrats — or enough of them — in follow-up public appearances. Major donors cut off money to his campaign and the party. In drip-drip-drip fashion, elected officials started to call for him to drop his bid.

Biden's decision to drop out of the race marks the first time an eligible incumbent president has done so since Lyndon Johnson in 1968.

In the wake of Biden's announcement, Democrats have begun to rally around Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's nominee. Biden endorsed Harris less than 30 minutes after announcing his decision to drop out of the race.

Harris has already won endorsements from former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, as well as several prominent Democratic governors and outside groups.

Biden's decision to drop out of the race comes as a surprise to many, as he had previously promised to be a bridge candidate and did not want to be a bridge between two Trump terms. However, his poll numbers had been slipping, and he faced mounting pressure from within his own party to step aside.

The news of Biden's decision to drop out of the race has sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party, and it remains to be seen how the party will fare in the upcoming election. However, one thing is clear: Trump and the Republican Party are ready to take on the challenge.
