President Joe Biden has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in November, sparking a wave of reactions from both sides of the political aisle. In a statement released on Sunday, Biden said that he will "stand down" from the presidential race and "focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

The announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with some Democrats expressing relief that Biden will not be running for re-election, while others have expressed concern about his ability to effectively carry out his duties as Commander-in-Chief.

Meanwhile, Republicans have been quick to seize on the opportunity to criticize Biden and the Democratic Party. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a statement that "If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough."

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, the conference chair and fourth-ranking House Republican, echoed Johnson's sentiments, saying that "If Joe Biden can’t run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to serve as President of the United States. He must immediately resign."

Other Republicans have gone even further, calling for Biden to be forcibly removed from office through the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., proposed that Biden be removed from office, saying that "If Joe Biden is unfit to run for re-election, he is unfit to carry out his term."

Meanwhile, some Republicans have accused the Democratic Party of undermining the will of voters who chose Biden as their nominee in 2020. House Speaker Johnson said in a statement that "Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite."

As the race for the White House heats up, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the Democratic nominee to challenge President Trump in November. However, one thing is clear: the 2024 election is shaping up to be one of the most contentious and divisive in recent memory.
