Thousands of supporters rally for Donald Trump and JD Vance in Michigan

Thousands of people poured into West Michigan on Saturday to show their support for Donald Trump and his recently-announced running mate, JD Vance. Photos and video captured by MLive showed lines that stretched over 1.5 miles as many hoped to see a glimpse of the Republican nominee for president.

Two hours after the doors opened, the line to get in stretched more than 16 blocks. The Grand Rapids campaign event marked the first rally by former President Trump since a gunman nearly killed him a week earlier, on July 13 in Pennsylvania.

Trump delivered a 115-minute speech to a packed arena of 12,000 supporters, who cheered him on as he spoke about his plans for the country if re-elected. Vance, who was recently announced as Trump's running mate, also participated in his first campaign event with the ex-president.

The rally comes after a week of intense media scrutiny following the attempted assassination of Trump. Many on the left have criticized the former president for continuing to hold rallies despite the assassination attempt, but Trump and his supporters have remained undeterred.

In fact, the attempted assassination seems to have only strengthened Trump's support among his base. Many supporters have expressed their gratitude for Trump's continued commitment to his campaign and his willingness to put himself in harm's way for the sake of the country.

The rally also comes as Trump continues to face criticism from the left for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Trump and his supporters have remained steadfast in their belief that the former president's policies were the right approach to dealing with the crisis.

Overall, the rally was a show of force for Trump and his supporters, who continue to rally behind the former president despite the many challenges he has faced. With the election just months away, it remains to be seen whether Trump's message will resonate with enough voters to secure him a second term in office.
