New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has signed a bill that will ban transgender athletes in grades 5-12 from teams that align with their gender identity. This makes New Hampshire the latest state to adopt such a measure, joining nearly half of the nation's states that have already done so.

The bill, which was passed by the Republican-led Legislature, will require schools to designate all teams as either girls, boys, or coed, with eligibility determined based on students' birth certificates "or other evidence." Supporters of the legislation argue that it is necessary to protect girls from being injured by larger and stronger transgender athletes.

Governor Sununu signed the bill on Friday, stating that it "ensures fairness and safety in women's sports by maintaining integrity and competitive balance in athletic competitions." The bill will take effect in 30 days.

However, not everyone is in favor of the new law. Megan Tuttle, president of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Education Association, has criticized the bill, saying that "public schools should be safe, welcoming environments for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity." She added that "shame on Governor Sununu for signing into law this legislation that excludes students from athletics, which can help foster a sense of belonging that is so critical for young people to thrive."

In addition to the bill banning transgender athletes from teams that align with their gender identity, Governor Sununu also signed a bill on Friday that will ban gender-affirming surgeries for transgender minors. This bill will take effect on January 1, 2025.

The care has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations. However, Governor Sununu wrote that "this bill focuses on protecting the health and safety of New Hampshire's children and has earned bipartisan support."

The signing of these bills comes at a time when the issue of transgender rights is being hotly debated across the country. While some argue that transgender individuals should be allowed to compete in sports and receive gender-affirming surgeries, others argue that these practices are unfair and potentially harmful.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how these new laws will impact transgender individuals in New Hampshire and beyond.
