A third Democratic senator has called on President Joe Biden to step aside and not seek re-election in November.

Senator Jon Tester of Montana, a Democrat, has publicly urged Biden not to run for a second term.

"Montanans have put their trust in me to do what is right, and it is a responsibility I take seriously," Tester said in a statement. "I have worked with President Biden when it has made Montana stronger, and I’ve never been afraid to stand up to him when he is wrong."

Tester added, "And while I appreciate his commitment to public service and our country, I believe President Biden should not seek re-election to another term."

Tester is the third Democratic senator to call on Biden to step aside, following Senators Peter Welch of Vermont and Adam Schiff of California.

The calls for Biden to step aside come as the president faces mounting pressure from within his own party. According to recent reports, former President Barack Obama, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have all privately urged Biden to reconsider his decision to stay in the race.

The pressure on Biden has been building for some time. In June, the president had a disastrous debate performance on CNN, in which he appeared rattled and at times was hard to follow.

Since then, Biden has faced a growing chorus of criticism from within his own party. According to a recent poll by National Public Radio, Biden and former President Donald Trump are in a statistical tie in nationwide results.

Biden's second bout with COVID-19 has only added to the pressure. On Wednesday, the president cancelled a speaking event in Las Vegas after testing positive for the virus. Video of Biden walking gingerly up the stairs of Air Force One was widely circulated on social media.

Despite the mounting pressure, Biden has shown no signs of backing down. In a recent interview, the president said he was "absolutely" planning to run for re-election.

However, if Biden were to decide not to seek another term, it would trigger a scramble within the Democratic Party to find a replacement. According to Tester, the party should hold an open nominating process to select a nominee.

Tester is running for re-election this November against Republican Tim Sheehy. Despite what many polls and analysts consider a tight race in Montana, Tester has a track record of winning close competitions.

In the past, Tester has been able to survive political attacks from former President Donald Trump. In 2020, Trump came to Montana on three different occasions during Tester's last re-election bid. However, Tester was able to hold on to his seat.

In the meantime, the pressure on Biden is only likely to continue to grow. With more and more Democrats calling on him to step aside, it remains to be seen how long the president can hold on.
