Biden's Approval Rating Still Suffers from Afghanistan Withdrawal, Says CNN Guest
On Thursday, Axios reporter Alex Thompson told a CNN panel that President Joe Biden's approval ratings have yet to recover from the August 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Thompson described the withdrawal as a "self-inflicted error" that has had a lasting impact on voters' perceptions of Biden.
The withdrawal from Afghanistan was widely criticized for its haphazard nature and failure to secure the region. Thirteen servicemembers were killed in a bombing as American forces were evacuating from Kabul. Thompson noted that Biden's handling of the withdrawal has been a major factor in his low approval ratings.
"His polling has never ever recovered," Thompson said. "If you look at his approval/disapproval rating, it crosses, and at that time with Afghanistan withdrawal and has never recovered."
Thompson also criticized Biden's response to the withdrawal, saying that he was "incredibly defensive" about his decision to withdraw from Afghanistan. He noted that Biden's interaction with the families of the slain servicemen, including checking his watch during the delivery of the fallen servicemen to Dover Air Force Base, had not helped his image.
"He looked at his watch while people came off — like while the bodies came off that plane," Thompson said. "Afterward, the families complained that he was talking too much about his own son, not about their sons. And in response to the criticism from those families, he did not reach back out."
Thompson also noted that former President Donald Trump had taken advantage of Biden's failure by reaching out to the families of the slain servicemen.
"Starting in September of 2021, Donald Trump was on the phone with these families, meeting with them, spending time with them, and that’s why they were on that stage last night, is because Joe Biden, who is supposed to be — this is supposed to be the thing he is greatest at —was too defensive to reach out to those families, and that’s why this is now a political problem four months before the election," Thompson concluded.
The withdrawal from Afghanistan has been a major issue for Biden, and it appears that his approval ratings have yet to recover from the botched withdrawal. With the election just four months away, it remains to be seen whether Biden will be able to regain the trust of voters.
