Eleven Christian leaders from a US group remain imprisoned in Nicaragua after evangelism efforts.

The leaders, who were sentenced to 12 or 15 years in prison and ordered to pay $880 million, have been barred from contacting their families and lawyers.

The charges against them, which include money laundering, are widely viewed as fabricated by supporters of the Christian leaders.

The imprisoned leaders are members of the Mountain Gateway group, which has denied the allegations and claimed that the charges were fabricated by the "authoritarian regime" of Nicaragua.

The group has been active in Nicaragua for 30 years and has led a "nationwide revival" in the country.

The imprisonment of the Christian leaders has sparked concern and outrage from various quarters, including the US-based Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International, which supports the legal defense of the imprisoned pastors.

The ADF has taken legal steps in cooperation with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, saying the pastors were "fraudulently convicted."

Members of the US Senate, including Republican Senators Rick Scott, Ted Cruz, Katie Britt, and Tommy Tuberville, are also advocating on behalf of the imprisoned Christians.

They have urged the Biden administration to "implement strong, targeted sanctions following the repeated & escalating violations of religious freedom in Nicaragua."

Alabama Representative Barry Moore is calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to get involved and is promoting a House Resolution to apply more pressure on the Nicaraguan government.

"What's happened to them (the pastors) is a travesty of justice," Moore told the US-based Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN).

The imprisonment of the Christian leaders comes as the Biden administration faces mounting calls from Democrats to end his re-election campaign in the aftermath of his disastrous June 27 debate against Donald Trump.

Several polls have shown the incumbent trailing the 78-year-old former president, with some Democrats privately pressuring Biden to step down.

Despite the calls for Biden to step down, some left-leaning figures, including Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, have expressed support for the president.

The endorsements and behind-the-scenes strategizing reflect a careful calculation that Biden offers the best hope for advancing liberal policies, according to people close to Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez.

However, some advisers to lawmakers on the left have questioned the strategy, asking "If Biden's not going to be president, what do these concessions really do?"

The Left knows what it's doing even if Biden doesn't, according to one adviser.

The situation in Nicaragua and the political turmoil in the US highlight the challenges facing the Biden administration as it navigates a complex and rapidly changing political landscape.
