YouTube's new policy threatens to wipe out gun content creators

YouTube, the popular video-sharing platform, has recently implemented a new policy that is causing concern among gun content creators. The policy, which was updated on June 18th, 2024, prohibits creators from posting content that sells firearms or certain firearms accessories through direct sales or links to sites that sell these items.

This policy change has had a significant impact on popular gun content creators like Hickok45, a retired schoolteacher and YouTube sensation known for his extensive collection of gun videos. In a recent video, Hickok45, whose real name is Greg Kinman, revealed that YouTube had removed many of his videos posted after June 18th due to their sponsorships from firearms companies.

"Some of you may have seen that YouTube changed their policy on gun videos in June 18th and we were not aware how much that was going to affect us until very recently when we just talked with our Google rep," Kinman said in the video. "And you may notice that our videos posted since June 18th have been removed."

Kinman went on to explain that any videos posted before June 18th are at risk of being terminated, while those posted after that date could result in the entire channel being terminated. This policy change could potentially wipe out nearly 95% of Hickok45's content, as he has had sponsorships from firearms companies almost the entire time he has been creating videos.

"So we are at the risk of losing everything and having to almost start from scratch," Kinman said.

The new policy has been met with criticism from gun content creators and their supporters, who argue that it unfairly targets a specific group of creators. Many have expressed concern that the policy could lead to the loss of valuable content and the silencing of voices in the gun community.

YouTube's policy change comes at a time when the debate over gun rights and regulations is at the forefront of American politics. While some argue for stricter gun control measures, others, including many conservatives and Republicans, support the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms.

The policy change also raises questions about the role of social media platforms in regulating content related to firearms. While YouTube has the right to set its own policies, some argue that the new policy is overly restrictive and could have a chilling effect on free speech.

As the debate over gun rights and regulations continues, it remains to be seen how YouTube's new policy will impact the gun content creator community. However, one thing is clear: the policy change has already had a significant impact on popular creators like Hickok45, who are now at risk of losing their channels and the valuable content they have created over the years.
