Senate briefing reveals more details about the attempted assassination of President Trump.

According to a senior congressional reporter for Punchbowl News, a Senate briefing on the shooting that took place at a Trump rally has concluded. The briefing revealed several key details about the shooter and the timeline of events leading up to the shooting.

The shooter reportedly visited the rally site a few days in advance to scope it out. Sixty-two minutes elapsed between the time the shooter was photographed as being suspicious and when he fired the shots. Additionally, twenty minutes elapsed between the time he was spotted by snipers and when he fired the shots.

FBI Director Wray stated that there is no known foreign nexus, but no established motive as of now. The shooter used encrypted communications and had little to no social media presence.

Senator Dan Sullivan asked about a foreign nexus, citing recent reporting about an Iranian assassination plot against Trump. However, only four questions were allowed on the call, and USSS Director Cheatle barely spoke.

The briefing comes as the Republican National Convention (RNC) is taking place in Milwaukee. So far, there has been a minimal presence of protesters at the RNC. Other than a large march on Monday by the leftist group the Coalition to March on the RNC, there have only been a smattering of small and scattered protests through the first three days of the convention.

Heading into the convention, Milwaukee and U.S. Secret Service officials had laid plans for there to be two "First Amendment zones" blocks from the Fiserv Forum, where protesters could gather. However, the two zones have been almost completely empty through the first three days of the convention.

The minimal protest footprint was on display at Zeidler Union Square Park, where Clifford Lee Johnson stood with three friends holding signs protesting against Trump. Johnson, of Milwaukee, said of the sparse protest presence, "I have to say, it's just stunning."

Johnson theorized that "maybe the assassination attempt somehow scared people off." He added, "Or, maybe a lot of people have a feeling that's just like, 'Why? What's the point?'"

The attempted assassination of President Trump and the minimal protest presence at the RNC are significant developments in the ongoing political landscape. As more details emerge about the shooting, it remains to be seen what the impact will be on the upcoming election.
