Congressional Democrats express concern over DNC's "virtual roll call"

As the Republican National Convention continues, a group of congressional Democrats have expressed their concerns over the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) plans for a "virtual roll call" to select the party's nominee. In a letter obtained by NBC News, the lawmakers urge the DNC to delay the process, citing concerns over stifling debate and prematurely shutting down any possible change in the Democratic ticket.

The letter, signed by more than 20 members of Congress, represents a range of stances on President Biden's future in the party. Some of the signatories have called for Biden to step aside, while others have urged him to stay in the race. The letter's authors note that "regardless of whether President Biden remains our nominee, Democratic unity and enthusiasm will be critical between now and November 5th."

The lawmakers argue that the virtual roll call could be perceived as curtailing legitimate debate or attempting to force an early resolution of the party nomination. They write, "we respectfully but emphatically request that you cancel any plans for an accelerated 'virtual roll call' and further refrain from any extraordinary procedures that could be perceived as curtailing legitimate debate or attempting to force an early resolution of the party nomination."

Among the signatories are Reps. Jared Huffman, Mike Levin, and Susan Wild. Huffman, who has been critical of Biden, is reportedly one of the key pushers behind the letter.

The DNC has not yet responded to the letter, but the concerns raised by these lawmakers highlight the ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party. As the Republican National Convention continues, the Democrats will need to address these concerns and work towards unity if they hope to mount a successful challenge to the Republicans in November.
