University of Virginia associate professor Sethunya Mokoko has sparked outrage by claiming that the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was a "staged event for suckers."

In a tweet that has since gone viral, Mokoko suggested that the Secret Service, local police, and the Trump campaign conspired to fake the assassination in order to win the votes of "idiots."

Mokoko's claims have been widely condemned as baseless and irresponsible, with many pointing out that the incident resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore, a fire chief from Pennsylvania.

The professor's bio states that his focus is on "teaching students to appreciate and value social justice rhetorics across media," but it is unclear how his latest comments fit into this mission.

In contrast to Mokoko's conspiracy theories, George Washington University Law Professor and Fox News senior legal analyst Jonathan Turley has suggested that the assassination attempt was motivated by "rage rhetoric" against Trump.

Regardless of the motivation behind the attack, it is clear that Mokoko's comments have caused further division and controversy in an already polarized political climate.
