In the past 12 months, at least 13 Americans have lost their lives at the hands of illegal immigrants, according to a report from the Daily Signal. The victims include seven minors, and the perpetrators have been charged with crimes ranging from capital murder to hit-and-run.

Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, blamed the Biden administration's open borders policy for the rise in illegal immigrant crime. "Instead of enforcing the laws they swore to uphold, Biden and [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas have devoted themselves to a policy of mass catch-and-release," Green said. "This radical agenda may excite their far-left base, but the rest of us are left wondering if one of our loved ones will be the next to fall victim to these violent crimes."

Among the victims was Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl from Houston who was allegedly lured under a bridge, tied up, and killed by two illegal immigrants from Venezuela. Franklin Jose Peña Ramos and Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel, both 26, have been charged with capital murder in her death. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called for the death penalty for the perpetrators. "These bastards should be executed, and they should burn in the pits of hell," Cruz said. "But we shouldn't have to be talking about this, because Jocelyn should still be with us."

Other victims include Gloria Cascio, who was killed in a car crash caused by an illegal immigrant who had crossed the border from Mexico in January; Ruby Garcia, who was shot and killed during a carjacking attempt by an illegal immigrant who had been deported to Mexico in 2020; and Washington State Trooper Christopher Gadd, who was killed in a high-speed crash caused by an illegal immigrant who had multiple run-ins with law enforcement dating back to 2013.

The rise in illegal immigrant crime coincides with an increase in the number of criminal illegal immigrants crossing the border. According to Customs and Border Protection, 13,130 criminal noncitizens have been encountered between ports of entry since the start of fiscal year 2024 on Oct. 1, setting up fiscal 2024 to outpace last year's 15,267 such encounters.

The Daily Signal report highlights the human cost of the Biden administration's open borders policy. As Rep. Green said, "The simple fact is that every crime committed by an illegal alien is one committed by an individual who should not have been at large in the country in the first place."
