Trump Campaign Challenges Bias: CNN Moderators Under Fire

CNN's Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, set to moderate the first presidential debate on Thursday, have faced renewed concerns over their bias against former President Donald Trump. Trump's campaign agreed to the debate after negotiating with President Joe Biden through social media posts. However, the campaign expects an uphill battle, with the moderators propping up Biden.

Trump National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted Tapper's past statements about Trump, including comparing him to Adolf Hitler. This led to CNN anchor Kasie Hunt ending an interview with Leavitt over her comments. Sean Spicer, former White House Communications Director, addressed the episode on Sky News Australia, stating that Leavitt had asked viewers to Google Jake Tapper and President Trump.

Spicer also referred to Tapper's past employment with then-Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and his work for a left-wing organization called Handgun Control. He suggested that Tapper's past would lead to an unfair debate, with Tapper potentially muting Trump's mic when he doesn't like what Trump is saying.

CNN defended Tapper and Bash, stating that they are well-respected veteran journalists with extensive experience moderating major political debates. However, some commentators have met CNN's denials with skepticism, citing Tapper's past comments about Trump.

Leavitt's remarks about Tapper's comparison were accurate, as Tapper previously stated that "the dehumanizing rhetoric of Adolf Hitler is once again alive and well on a national political stage. This time, of course, in the United States. This time, given life by former president and current Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump."

Bash also addressed Trump's remarks in March, stating that "Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion" is a longstanding antisemitic trope. She called the comment a symbol of Trump’s disregard for human life, citing his personal behavior during the pandemic.

Throughout Trump's administration, Tapper's program was a consistent platform for major proponents of the now-debunked Trump-Russia collusion narrative. Tapper himself continued to frame the narrative against Trump even after the publication of the Mueller Report, which found no evidence of collusion.

While not related to Trump, Tapper's program currently stands at the center of a defamation lawsuit from Zachary Young, owner of security consulting firm Nemex Enterprises, over the network’s coverage of its operations. Tapper himself is not a defendant.

The debate on Thursday is set to be a contentious one, with Trump facing off against Biden and two moderators who have been accused of bias against him. Trump's campaign has expressed concern over the fairness of the debate, with Leavitt stating that "the Charlottesville lie was another hoax perpetuated by the corrupt Democrats and their mouthpieces in the fake news media."

CNN has not responded to requests for comment on the matter. The debate will be held on Thursday in Atlanta and will be broadcast on CNN.
