Steve Bannon to Serve Prison Sentence in Connecticut Facility

Steve Bannon, former Chief of Staff to President Donald Trump, has been ordered to report to Federal Correctional Institution Danbury in Danbury, Connecticut, to serve a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress charges. The Tennessee Star confirmed the news on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.

Bannon's prison sentence stems from a 2022 conviction on contempt of Congress charges for ignoring a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee. He has been ordered to report to prison on July 1 following a rejected appeal.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that Bannon appealed his case to Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, who is charged with handling emergency appeals from Washington, D.C. However, the chief justice gave the Department of Justice until Wednesday to weigh in on the matter.

Bannon's attorney argued that the only proper way to address the subpoena was to ignore it, as the principle of executive privilege was involved in Bannon's case. As such, Bannon ignored the subpoena.

The federal case against Bannon was ultimately overseen by the Department of Justice (DOJ), headed by Attorney General Merrick Garland. However, Garland himself defied congressional subpoenas to turn over audio recordings between President Joe Biden and Special Counsel Robert Hur, who was overseeing a criminal investigation into the President's alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Biden invoked executive privilege to keep the audio recordings secret. The DOJ's Department of Legislative Affairs explained its decision not to prosecute Garland, stating that his responses to the subpoenas did not constitute a crime.

Bannon will serve his sentence at a facility known for housing violent offenders. The Federal Correctional Institution Danbury has a history of housing inmates convicted of serious crimes, including sex offenders and drug-related charges.

The decision to place Bannon in such a setting underscores the severity of his ongoing legal issues and the implications of his conviction. It also follows a judge's order for Bannon to report to prison by July 1.

In a June 6 decision, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols of the District Court for D.C. ruled that Bannon should serve his jail sentence at the soonest. The magistrate stated that he did not believe the "original basis" for his stay of the imposition of Bannon's sentence existed any longer, following an appeals court rejecting Bannon's appeal in May and upholding his conviction.

Trump himself condemned the sentence on Bannon in a post on Truth Social, calling it a "total and complete American tragedy." He suggested that instead of his former chief strategist, members of the Jan. 6 Select Committee should be prosecuted instead.

Bannon's impending imprisonment at FCI Danbury marks a significant moment in his legal battles. It also raises concerns about his safety and security during his incarceration.

In other news, Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has been freed after pleading guilty to a U.S. espionage charge. Assange was expected to plead guilty to the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. However, it is unclear whether he will face any further legal action.
