Expanding 'Obamacare' to Illegal Immigrants Would Cost Billions, Federal Agency Reports
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has released a report revealing that expanding 'Obamacare' to illegal immigrants enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program would cost taxpayers billions of dollars annually.
The CBO projects that, on average, about 110,000 DACA recipients would enroll to receive health care because of the new rule, costing taxpayers $7 billion per year from 2025 through 2034. If a related tax credit is made permanent, the cost would increase to $9 billion per year from 2024 through 2035.
Illegal immigrants who are brought to the United States at a young age are eligible for DACA, which was created during the Obama administration. While in the DACA program, illegal immigrants are shielded from deportation. However, they are not typically eligible for federal health care coverage.
The new rule from the Department of Health and Human Services makes DACA recipients eligible for the health insurance marketplace and basic health programs by stating that they are lawfully present for insurance purposes.
Republicans have criticized the move, with Rep. Erin Smith (R-Ind.) stating that "the continued prioritization of non-citizens over Americans is appalling and must be stopped."
The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Democrats, however, have praised the new rule, with Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) stating that "President Biden is committed to supporting our dreamers, who are an integral part of the fabric of America."
The CBO also reported that permanently expanding subsidies for Obamacare would cost $383 billion over the next decade and go to many wealthy individuals.
"At a time when we are experiencing a record $35 trillion national debt, with health care expenditures accounting for nearly 18 percent of GDP, it is unconscionable that Democrats would continue to push for massive taxpayer-funded handouts to the wealthy and large health insurance companies," said Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas), chairman of the House Budget Committee, and Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, in a joint statement.
The CBO's report highlights the significant financial burden that expanding Obamacare to illegal immigrants would have on American taxpayers. As the 2024 election approaches, the issue of illegal immigration and its impact on the economy is likely to be a key issue for voters.
