Texas megachurch pastor Robert Morris resigns amid sexual assault allegations.

Gateway Church, one of the largest churches in the United States, is reeling from the news that its founding pastor, Robert Morris, has resigned after being publicly accused of sexually assaulting a child in the 1980s. The allegations have sparked protests and calls for accountability from the North Texas community.

The allegations were brought to light 35 years ago, and Morris stepped away from ministry for two years to receive counseling. However, the victim, Cindy Clemishire, has come forward to say that she was only 12 years old at the time of the abuse, which continued until 1987.

In a statement to The Christian Post, Morris admitted to "inappropriate sexual behavior" with a "young lady" but did not specify the age of the victim. Church elders have since confirmed that they were not aware of the victim's age at the time of the abuse.

The allegations have sent shockwaves through the Gateway Church community, with many expressing their shock and grief at the news. Tra Willbanks, a Gateway Church elder, addressed the congregation on Saturday, expressing his personal compassion for Clemishire and apologizing for the church's failure to protect her.

Outside the church, protesters held signs supporting Clemishire and calling for accountability from church leadership. Some got into heated exchanges with church members, with one protester calling for Morris to go to jail.

The church has since hired an outside law firm to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations. In the meantime, Morris has stepped down from his position as pastor, and the church is seeking to move forward with transparency and accountability.

This news comes at a time when the issue of sexual abuse in the church is under intense scrutiny, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability from church leaders. The Gateway Church community is now grappling with the fallout of these allegations and seeking to find a way forward.
