Trump Campaign Spends $3.8 Million on Legal Fees in May

Former President Donald Trump's campaign spent $3.8 million on legal fees in May, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Save America, the former president's qualified leadership political action committee, covered most of the costs, paying out about $3.7 million to various firms for legal consulting and reimbursement for legal expenses. The PAC ended the month indebted by about $862,000 to various legal firms for their services.

Smaller amounts were paid by the principal campaign committee, Donald J. Trump for President 2024 Inc., and the super PAC Make America Great Again Inc.

Despite the legal expenses, Save America took in just $4,337.62 in May but ended the month with $4.5 million in cash on hand.

Former President Trump has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and called the charges against him politically motivated.

Meanwhile, the Biden campaign has leaned in on calling former President Trump a felon. On June 17, Biden For President announced a $50 million advertising plan in so-called battleground states that promote the message that the former president is "a criminal."

With the general election now less than six months away, the former president still awaits several trials.

In other news, former Trump advisor Steve Bannon has filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in an attempt to remain out of prison for his contempt of Congress conviction. Bannon was ordered by Judge Carl Nichols to surrender to prison by July 1 to serve his four-month sentence.

Bannon's attorney argued in Friday's filing that "an even-handed approach thus strongly favors allowing Mr. Bannon to remain on release."

"There is also no denying the fact that the government seeks to imprison Mr. Bannon for the four-month period immediately preceding the November presidential election," Bannon's attorney said. "There is no reason for that outcome in a case that presents substantial legal issues."

Bannon was sentenced to four months for contempt of Congress in October 2022 after he was found guilty of defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Judge Nichols agreed to postpone the jail term while Bannon appealed the conviction.

After a federal appeals court upheld the criminal conviction in May, prosecutors requested Bannon begin serving his prison term.

"All of this is about one thing. Shutting down the MAGA movement. Shutting down grassroots conservatives, shutting down President Trump," Bannon said to reporters in June.
