Biden Campaign Fights 'Cheap Fakes', Ignores Economy

The Biden campaign has reportedly established a special task force to mitigate the impact of "cheap fake" videos that show President Joe Biden malfunctioning in public. According to a Politico report, the White House has become increasingly sensitive about videos that expose moments of strange confusion from the president.

The term "cheap fakes" was coined by the Biden Administration after a video on Sunday showed former President Barack Obama walking Biden off stage after the president appeared to freeze at a fundraiser. Another video from June 13 appeared to show Biden wandering off into the distance in Europe before Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni turned him back to the group of world leaders watching a skydiving show. A third video showed Vice President Kamala Harris and allies dancing at a Juneteenth event while Biden appeared to stare blankly, not moving, with an empty smile on his face.

The Biden campaign "established a taskforce to mitigate the risks" posed by cheap fakes, a Biden official told Politico's West Wing Playbook Tuesday evening. The campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg stressed that it is also the responsibility of social media companies and media allies to mitigate the impact of the videos.

However, not everyone is buying into the "cheap fake" spin. "The truth hurts," said one anonymous source close to the Biden campaign. "When the Biden campaign is confronted with that cold, hard reality, they offer ridiculous claims that anyone who clearly sees Biden acting like a brain-dead dope is part of some media-wide conspiracy."

The creation of this task force comes as top Democrats are reportedly fearful of being labeled "disloyal" for questioning the Biden campaign's focus on Jan. 6 and democracy. According to an Axios report, aides close to President Joe Biden are beginning to question the campaign's strategy, but are hesitant to voice their concerns for fear of being exiled from the Biden circle.

Despite polls that show Americans are most concerned about the economy and inflation, there is reportedly no discussion within the Biden campaign about changing course. Biden's approval rating sits around 38 percent, with no notable change since former president Donald Trump's felony conviction last month. Forty-six percent of Americans say they are struggling financially, while just 9 percent say they are improving financially, according to a Monmouth University poll released Wednesday.

As the 2024 presidential election nears, it remains to be seen whether the Biden campaign's focus on democracy and the creation of a task force to mitigate the impact of "cheap fake" videos will be enough to sway voters.
