In a recent article from Fox News, House Republicans are utilizing the upcoming defense policy bill, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of fiscal year 2025, as a means to push back against perceived left-wing policies within the Biden administration. Over 1,300 amendments have been proposed, with a focus on combatting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the Pentagon.

Key amendments include proposals to eliminate the department’s principal diversity offices, block federal funds from creating DEI offices in service academies, and prohibit funding for DEI programs. Additionally, there are amendments addressing Pride Month celebrations, transgender surgeries, and gender-affirming care within the military.

While the House Rules Committee is set to discuss the NDAA, it is expected that these culture war-related measures may not receive Democratic support. Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) has called for the rejection of partisan riders in the defense bill to maintain bipartisan traditions in the House Armed Services Committee.

It remains to be seen how many of these amendments will pass, but the inclusion of these controversial topics in the defense bill showcases the ongoing political divide surrounding issues of diversity, LGBTQ representation, and gender ideology within the military.
