A man convicted of a brutal hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, husband to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The attacker, David DePape, admitted his intention to hold the Speaker hostage and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer. Prosecutors had requested a 40-year prison term for DePape.

The victim impact statement was read by the couple's daughter, Christine Pelosi. DePape's defense attorneys claimed he was motivated by his political beliefs and conspiracy theories. The attack occurred just days before the 2022 midterm elections. Paul Pelosi suffered severe injuries, including skull fractures that required emergency surgery. DePape faces additional state charges, and jury selection for that trial is scheduled to start soon.
