The US House of Representatives has approved a bill that would zero out the funding for the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was designed to increase the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) enforcement capabilities. The legislation has been supported by Republicans, who claimed during their midterm campaign that Democrats were planning to send "an army of IRS agents" to target middle and lower-class taxpayers with the new funding from the IRA. However, Democrats and the Biden administration have argued that the increased tax revenue from the IRA will help to close the tax gap, which is the difference between the amount of tax owed and the amount paid by taxpayers, and pay for the IRA itself.
