Biden Mega-Donor Reid Hoffman Weighs in on Trump Shooting, Faces Backlash for "Both Sides" Approach

Reid Hoffman, a prominent donor to President Joe Biden, has faced criticism for his response to the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In a lengthy post on Sunday, Hoffman expressed his horror and sadness at the incident, but also attempted to address the issue of political violence from "all sides."

Hoffman's post comes after reports emerged last week that he had expressed a desire to make Trump into "an actual martyr." The comment was made during a summit in Idaho, where Hoffman and former friend Peter Thiel discussed the impact of Hoffman's funding of lawsuits against Trump. Thiel had suggested that Hoffman's actions had turned Trump into a martyr, to which Hoffman reportedly replied, "I wish I had made him an actual martyr."

In his post, Hoffman attempted to clarify his comments, stating that he had meant "nothing about any sort of physical harm or violence, which I categorically deplore." He went on to argue that Trump should be held accountable to the rule of law, citing the former president's recent conviction on 34 felony counts and an $84 million judgment for slander and lies about sexual assault.

However, Hoffman's attempt to address the issue of political violence from "all sides" has drawn criticism from conservatives. In his post, Hoffman wrote that "Everyone, on all sides of this election, should condemn political violence loudly and publicly," and went on to call on President Trump to speak out against political violence.

Critics have pointed out that Hoffman's post fails to acknowledge the role that left-wing violence has played in recent years. For example, Hoffman did not mention the plot against Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022, the brutal assault on Senator Rand Paul in November 2017, or the shooting of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise in June 2017.

Megyn Kelly was among those who criticized Hoffman's post, tweeting that "Your very attempt to 'both sides' it reveals your insincerity. I have multiple sources who were in the room when you said it and everyone took away the same meaning: you wanted Trump dead. You're not fooling anyone."

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the left and right in American politics, and the challenges of addressing political violence in a polarized environment. While Hoffman's post may have been well-intentioned, it has only served to further inflame tensions and underscore the deep divisions in American society.
