Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is under fire for his recent comments regarding the security detail for former President Donald Trump.

In the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, many questions have been raised about the security measures in place.

Mayorkas, in a recent interview with ABC News, claimed that Trump had "enhanced security" since June. However, this statement has been met with skepticism and criticism from many, including retired Army General who stated that "somebody failed to appreciate the militarily significant aspects of terrain."

Additionally, reports have surfaced that Trump had requested heightened security resources from the Secret Service for weeks prior to the rally, but was denied. It has also been reported that Secret Service resources were diverted from Trump's rally to provide security for Jill Biden.

Democrat Congressman Bennie Thompson, who previously proposed removing Trump's Secret Service protection, has also come under fire for his response to the assassination attempt. Thompson introduced a bill in April 2024 which would strip convicted felons who had been sentenced to prison of Secret Service protection, clearly targeting Trump and putting him in danger.

The alleged shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service Counter Assault Team within seconds of his first shots. However, questions have been raised about how Crooks was able to access a rooftop around 450 feet away from the stage where Trump was speaking and why local police did not guard the area.

President Joe Biden has postponed his scheduled visit to Texas following the attempted assassination of Trump. Biden originally planned to visit Austin on July 15 to speak at the LBJ Presidential Library to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

In a speech from the Oval Office, Biden addressed the nation and stated that he spoke with Trump and is grateful that he is doing well and recovering. He also urged the public not to make assumptions about the shooter's motives or affiliations.

As the investigation continues, it is clear that many questions remain about the security measures in place for Trump and the actions of the Secret Service and local police. The American people deserve answers and accountability.
