President Joe Biden has ordered the U.S. Secret Service to protect independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., following the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the news on Monday, stating that Biden had directed the protection for Kennedy "both prior to and after the events of this past weekend."

Kennedy, who is a longshot to win Electoral College votes, has been drawing large crowds at his campaign events. Despite not participating in the first presidential debate on June 27, Kennedy has argued that his relatively strong showing in a few national polls gives his candidacy heft.

The Secret Service is legally required to protect major party presidential and vice presidential candidates and their families 120 days out from a general election. However, third-party candidates are protected on an as-needed basis.

The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged in its 2024 budget overview that recent requests for candidate protection were coming in earlier than in the past. Mayorkas said that both Biden and Trump are "constantly the subject of threats."

"We are in a heightened and very dynamic threat environment," he added.

The news comes as Trump announced his pick for Vice President, selecting Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate. The Biden campaign promptly criticized the selection, accusing Trump of picking Vance because he will "bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda."

Despite the criticism, Trump's supporters remain optimistic about his chances in the upcoming election. With a famous name and a loyal base, Kennedy has the potential to do better than any third-party presidential candidate since Ross Perot in the 1990s. However, both the Biden and Trump campaigns fear that Kennedy could be a spoiler in the election.

As the election season heats up, it remains to be seen how Kennedy's candidacy will impact the race. However, one thing is clear: the Secret Service will be playing a crucial role in protecting all candidates in this heightened threat environment.
