WASHINGTON — A social media post by an FBI employee expressing disappointment that former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt has ignited a firestorm of criticism and raised questions about potential biases within the bureau.

Jenna Howell, who works in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), shared her controversial views online, according to a tweet by former FBI agent Kyle Seraphim. Howell, who holds a top-secret clearance, also expressed disdain for gun owners.

"Jenna Howell, an @FBI employee who works in the NICS firearms background check unit, posted her disappointment @realDonaldTrump survived an assassination attempt," Seraphim tweeted. "Jenna has a Top Secret clearance. This is a typical #FBI support employee. And she hates gun owners."

Howell's post, which has since been widely circulated, included a comment lamenting Trump's survival and disparaging gun enthusiasts. Another post mocked Second Amendment supporters, urging them to stay silent unless they change their views on gun control.

The NICS, established under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993, plays a crucial role in conducting background checks for firearm purchases in the United States. The act was named after James Brady, who was severely injured during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Howell's remarks have prompted public outcry, with critics questioning the impartiality of individuals working in such sensitive positions. The FBI has not yet commented on Howell's statements or any potential disciplinary actions.

The controversy underscores broader concerns about bias within the FBI and the importance of maintaining neutrality in the agency's operations. The integrity of the NICS system, which aims to prevent gun violence and ensure public safety, is particularly under scrutiny.

As the situation develops, observers are keenly watching for the FBI's response and any measures it might implement to address concerns about internal bias and uphold its commitment to impartiality and justice.
